At Knights, we believe that education is about more than simply covering content. It is about equipping students with the skills they need to manage themselves effectively and succeed in an increasingly demanding academic environment. IGNITE, which stands for Independent Growth and Nurturing Individual Thought and Excellence, was developed with this purpose in mind.

IGNITE was born from my experience as a Grade 6 and 7 Mathematics teacher. Over time, I realised that many students were not struggling because they did not understand the work, but because they had not yet developed the underlying skills needed to manage their learning effectively. Academic success requires more than subject knowledge. It requires structure, self-awareness and the ability to approach tasks with intention.

At Knights, IGNITE is offered to all Grade 4 to 7s in English and Mathematics, as these subjects form the foundation for all other learning. Within these lessons, we intentionally develop essential executive functioning skills that strengthen both performance and confidence. Students are guided in managing their time wisely so that assignments and assessment preparation are approached steadily rather than rushed at the last moment. They are taught practical organisational habits that help them keep their books, files and digital platforms in order. Emphasis is placed on task initiation so that students develop the confidence to begin work independently and move past unnecessary delay.

We also cultivate self-monitoring by encouraging students to review their work thoughtfully, identify areas for improvement and take responsibility for meeting required standards. Flexible thinking is strengthened as students practise adapting their approach when challenges arise. Planning and prioritising are woven into daily practice, enabling students to break larger tasks into manageable steps and decide what needs attention first.

Through IGNITE, we are building independent, responsible students who are equipped not only with knowledge, but with the habits and mindset needed for sustained academic growth and excellence.
